The most effective engineers do more than solve difficult technical problems. They understand how engineering decisions are made, how teams work together, and how technical work creates impact within complex organizations.
The GradEL Engineering Residency internship program is designed for MIT graduate students who want to accelerate that kind of development. Through a six-month immersive internship, you’ll contribute as a member of a leading engineering team while gaining exposure to the decisions, collaboration, and organizational complexity that shape engineering in practice.
With one-on-one coaching from GradEL advisors, you’ll develop perspective, communication, and leadership capabilities as well as valuable industry experience and a broader perspective on how you can create impact.
Residency isn’t simply six months spent at a company. The experience is intentionally structured before, during, and after your internship to help you get more from your time in industry and bring more of it back with you.

Yes. Participating in Residency typically requires stepping away from your research and coursework for six contiguous months, so support from your PI/advisor and department is essential. We strongly encourage you to start those conversations early—ideally before applying—and GradEL can help you think through how to approach them.
Depth takes time. Six months gives you more opportunity to move beyond onboarding, build trust and relationships, take on meaningful technical work, and understand the broader context surrounding that work. It also gives you time to intentionally develop through coaching, reflection, and learning alongside your Residency cohort.
Six contiguous months is the preferred Residency experience because it provides the greatest opportunity for immersion, contribution, and development. We recognize that some academic programs may make that impossible. In limited circumstances, there is precedent for structuring a Residency across two three-month summer periods. Talk with GradEL early if you think your academic constraints may require an alternative arrangement.
The details of a six-month Residency can vary depending on your department, academic status, funding arrangements, and host company. GradEL will help you identify the questions you need to resolve, but you should discuss your individual circumstances with your PI/advisor and department early in the process.
No. Residency is a selective program, and available opportunities are intentionally limited. GradEL considers your technical background, interests, professional maturity, and fit with available opportunities before recommending candidates to host companies. Host companies then conduct their own interviews and make final hiring decisions.
Our goal is to help interested students become as competitive as possible, so we encourage you to engage with GradEL well before you apply.

One advantage of Residency is that GradEL works directly with host companies to understand their needs and help identify potential matches based on students’ specialized expertise and interests. Fit matters, but it may not always look like a conventional job-description-to-résumé match.
No. Residency is first and foremost a developmental experience, not a guarantee of future employment. It does, however, give you and your host company six months to understand whether there could be a strong long-term fit. To date, 90% of GradEL Residents have received return offers from their host companies.
No. Residency can be valuable whether your future takes you into industry, academia, entrepreneurship, or somewhere else. The experience gives you an opportunity to apply your technical expertise in a different environment while developing skills and perspective you can bring back to your research and carry throughout your career.
No. Residency is designed for students who want to become more effective engineers—not only students pursuing formal leadership roles. You’ll develop and practice capabilities such as communication, collaboration, decision-making, stakeholder awareness, and navigating complex organizations that can make you a stronger individual contributor, teammate, researcher, or future leader.
