About GradEL

Creating a better world is a team sport.

In many cases, the difference between a transformative idea and wishful thinking is the ability to bring the former to life—and to inspire others to help it succeed. In technical disciplines across all industries, there are countless exceptionally talented people with the skills to solve problems—but there are only a select few who have the effective communication, team-building, negotiation, and reasoning abilities needed to stand out and make an impact.

The Daniel J. Riccio Graduate Engineering Leadership Program (GradEL) develops the capabilities necessary to lead teams and organizations, from directing functional and research work to making impactful decisions in companies and startups. The program builds on students’ technical education by allowing them to practice identifying worthy problems to solve, developing highly effective teams, creating innovative solutions, and communicating an inspiring vision.

Students start by trying a GradEL course or workshop and then find great value in earning the Certificate in Technical Leadership. GradEL prepares students to assess the real-world context of their work—and to create real-world impact after graduation.

GradEL is one of MIT’s Technical Leadership and Communication programs (TLC).
